The 2025 G20 Agriculture Working Group Ministerial Meeting and the Food Security Task Force Ministerial Meeting were held in Cape Town, South Africa, from September 18–19. Huang Yan, Member of the CPC Leading Group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, led the Chinese delegation and delivered keynote speeches.
At the Agriculture Working Group Ministerial Meeting, Huang highlighted China’s significant progress in agricultural and rural modernization, including ensuring the stable and secure supply of food and key agro-products; consolidating the gains in poverty reduction; advancing green development in agriculture; building livable, prosperous and beautiful villages; and strengthening the capacity of smallholder farmers. She called on all parties to increase financial, technological, and market support for developing countries; ease restrictions on exchange in cutting-edge technology; promote digital and smart transformation across the agricultural industry chain; uphold the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core; keep agro-trade flowing smoothly; and work together to address risks and challenges.
At the Food Security Task Force Ministerial Meeting, Huang noted that the Chinese government has always viewed safeguarding food security as a priority in governance. President Xi Jinping has underscored that China must always be self-reliant in ensuring the food supply for its people, with the majority of grains produced domestically. With less than 9% of the world’s arable land, China feeds one-fifth of the global population, making a significant contribution to global food security. China seeks to work with all countries to continuously deepen cooperation on food security, support the UN’s central role in coordination, promote agricultural technology sharing and resource integration, maintain stable and unimpeded global agricultural supply chains, and advance the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
The meetings, hosted by South Africa’s Ministry of Agriculture, brought together agriculture ministers from G20 members and invited countries, along with representatives from the FAO, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, and other international and regional organizations. The meetings adopted the G20 Food Security Task Force Ministerial Declaration.
On the sidelines of the meetings, Huang also held meetings with John Steenhuisen, South Africa’s Minister of Agriculture, and Zaqy Mohamad, Senior Minister of State of Singapore’s Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment.
