Jiang Wensheng, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, met with Paul Ronoh, Principal Secretary in Kenya’s State Department for Agriculture under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, in Nairobi on July 4. The two officials exchanged views on China–Kenya agricultural cooperation and agreed to further strengthen collaboration in areas such as personnel exchange, policy dialogue, agro-trade, poverty reduction, and rural development.
Following the meeting, Vice Minister Jiang and Principal Secretary Ronoh co-chaired the China–FAO–Kenya Trilateral Meeting on South–South Cooperation in Agriculture. Vice Minister Jiang noted that China and the FAO have jointly implemented several South–South cooperation projects in Kenya, including the Fall Armyworm (FAW) control project and the global low-carbon tea project. Through S&T research and development, trials and demonstration programs, and technical training, these projects have enhanced the capacity of local agricultural technicians and farmers to adopt modern technologies.
Vice Minister Jiang expressed hope that Kenya would continue to value the triangular cooperation and promote high-quality development of ongoing projects. He said China also hopes the FAO can further leverage its management expertise and technical know-how, and enhance the visibility of project outcomes and scale up best practices.
Principal Secretary Ronoh expressed appreciation for the strong support provided by China and the FAO. He reaffirmed that Kenya would continue to ensure the effective implementation of the projects, with a view to achieving even greater success. Nyabenyi Tipo, FAO Representative in Kenya, and Guo Haiyan, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, attended the meeting.
During his stay in Kenya, Vice Minister Jiang also conducted field visits to South–South cooperation projects in Embu, including the laboratory for biological control of the FAW, experimental fields, and farmer field schools.
