The 2025 China–Vietnam Joint Event for Propagation and Release of Fishery Resources in the Beibu Gulf was held in the Beilun River estuary in Dongxing, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on May 16. Maierdan Mugaiti, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, Phung Duc Tien, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment of Vietnam, Zhang Xiaoqin, Vice Chair of the Standing Committee of the People’s Congress of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and Pham Thanh Binh, Vietnamese Ambassador to China, attended the event.

The Beibu Gulf boasts a unique geographic location and favorable climate conditions. The joint fish propagation and release event is a concrete step to implement the Joint Statement between China and Vietnam on Continuing to Deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership and Promoting the Building of the China–Vietnam Community with a Shared Future that Carries Strategic Significance. It also represents a collaborative effort between China and Vietnam to promote harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature and to conserve the shared marine ecosystem. Since 2017, China and Vietnam have been working together to promote sustainable fishery development in the Beibu Gulf and have held fish propagation and release events for eight times. These events have been repeatedly highlighted in China–Vietnam joint communiqués and statements, setting a model of fishery cooperation for countries bordering the South China Sea.

A total of 74.77 million aquatic fry and broodstock of 10 species, including yellowfin seabream and red seabream, were released during this year’s event. In recent years, China has released a total of over 420 million fry of aquatic species into the Beibu Gulf. Monitoring data shows that the recapture rate of propagation has remained at a relatively high level of over 5%.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Vietnam and is also the “China–Vietnam Year of People-to-People Exchanges”. Going forward, the two sides will continue to expand comprehensive cooperation in agriculture and fishery, accelerate negotiations on the Beibu Gulf Fishery Cooperation Agreement, jointly strengthen routine management of fishing vessels and fishermen, leverage sci-tech innovation, and promote high-quality and modernized development of agriculture and fisheries.

Representatives from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chinese Coast Guard, and relevant departments of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, as well as representatives from the Consulate General of Vietnam in Nanning and from the Vietnam Fisheries Society participated in the event.
