The 55th Session of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR55) was held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, on June 3. Zhang Xingwang, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA), Hu Yun, Vice Governor of Sichuan Province, Zhang Zhongjun, Acting FAO Representative in China, Soren Madsen, WHO official, and Steve Wearne, Chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), attended the meeting and delivered remarks. Pan Wenbo, Chief Agronomist of MARA, participated in the meeting and met with some of the participants before the meeting.
The CCPR is one of the general subject committees under the CAC and is primarily responsible for establishing Codex maximum limits for pesticide residues in food, which serve as important references for countries in their standard-setting processes. When China assumed the CCPR presidency in 2006, it set up a secretariat at MARA’s Institute for Control of Agrochemicals and began hosting CCPR sessions every year. This year marks the 17th annual session hosted by China. The session, which lasted six days, discussed 13 agenda items and reviewed more than 400 proposed maximum residue limits for over 30 pesticides in agro-products. More than 300 representatives from 56 member countries and one member organization (the EU), 10 international organizations, attended the meeting.
