The 14th Dairy Conference of China and the 2023 China Dairy Top 20 Summit were held in Chongqing on July 20, 2023. Vice Minister Ma Youxiang attended the opening ceremony and delivered remarks.
It was noted at the Conference that milk production in China registered 40.27 million tons in 2022, surpassing 40 million tons for the first time and ranking fourth globally. Production per cow averaged 9.2 tons, twice that of 2008, and production per cow on large-scale dairy farms exceeded the average level of the European Union. By sampling inspection, 100% raw milk and 99.9% dairy products have met relevant qualifications, respectively while the protein and fat content are up to the standards of developed countries. The market share of domestically produced infant formula powder exceeded 68%.
The Conference emphasized that China’s dairy industry in general is still in a critical period of transformation and upgrading. It is necessary to pursue high-quality development characterized by standard-based production, quality products, diversified supply, and industrial integration. Efforts should be made to develop dairy farms, propel the breeding of high-quality dairy cows, expand the supply of high-quality forage, and promote large-scale dairy farming, thereby laying a solid foundation for upgrading the industry.
The Conference called the dairy sector to explore mechanisms for adjusting dairy capacity to secure a stable market, mechanisms that better serve the interests of both enterprises and dairy farmers to ensure stable profits, thus creating a favorable environment for healthy and sustainable development of the dairy industry.
