The National Conference on International Agricultural Cooperation and the Kickoff Meeting of the Bases for High-Quality Development of International Agricultural Trade were held from May 28–29, in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Participants illustrated their work on international agricultural cooperation in recent years, assessed the current situation and set priorities for the coming years. Ma Youxiang, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, attended the meeting and delivered remarks.
The meeting pointed out that, during the 13th Five-Year-Plan, China cooperated with the rest of the world in agriculture with a focus on serving its political and diplomatic needs and supporting domestic rural development. Over the past five years, new progresses were achieved in improvements of cooperation mechanisms and platforms, economic and trade cooperation, foreign assistance and China’s engagement in global governance.
The complex and fluid international political, business and investment landscapes, and widespread COVID-19 pandemic now and for some time to come calls for a full understanding of the underpinning role of international agricultural cooperation in promoting national development and rural revitalization. It is necessary to fulfill the political tasks assigned by the government, find new ways to improve agricultural services and trade and build better systems and teams for international cooperation so as to achieve the fundamental goals for national development.
Leading officials from agricultural departments of all provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, cities specifically designated in the state plan and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps attended the meeting. Representatives from the National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Commerce, General Administration of Customs and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade as well as industry associations and companies were also invited. During the meeting, participants also visited the bases for High-quality Development of International Agricultural Trade.
