Sun Tan, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), met with Carlos Watson, newly-appointed Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in China on April 12, 2021. The two sides held an in-depth discussion on furthering CAAS-FAO cooperation, particularly in facilitating the earlier launch of FAO-CAAS Regional Innovation Centre.
CAAS Vice President Sun Tan stated that CAAS highly values its partnership with FAO and other international organizations. Both sides should make full use of their comparative advantages and expand areas of cooperation to secure food security, sustainable development and poverty reduction in China and beyond. In this regard, FAO-CAAS Regional Innovation Centre could offer greater support in innovation. He hoped that CAAS and FAO could join hands to facilitate enabling cooperation in agricultural technological innovation a focus of Phase Ⅲ of the China-FAO South-South Cooperation Programme, thus to promote global sustainable food system.
Carlos Watson said FAO Representation in China will work with CAAS to develop a timetable and will keep in contact with FAO headquarters to facilitate earlier launch of FAO-CAAS Regional Innovation Centre. FAO Representation in China will also promote cooperation in innovation to promote sustainable agricultural development in China and sharing China’s experience with the rest of the world.
Representatives from CAAS Bureau of International Cooperation and FAO Representation in China attended the meeting.
