The Thematic Session on Food Security of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) was held at WTO headquarters in Geneva on June 13. WTO Director-General Okonjo Iweala attended the session. Ministers and representatives of WTO members participated and 70 representatives delivered remarks. Ma Youxiang, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, attended the session and shared China’s position.

Vice Minister Ma said China appreciates WTO’s efforts to safeguard global food security. He said China supports in principle MC12 arriving at a ministerial declaration on food security and a decision on exempting food purchased by the World Food Programme (WFP) for humanitarian purposes from export restrictions, and promotes the building of a resilient and sustainable food system. China attaches great importance to food security and mainly relies on itself to guarantee its domestic food supply. China has proposed a Global Development Initiative (GDI), continues to provide emergency food assistance to other countries, and works with international organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and WFP, thus contributing greatly to global food security.

Vice Minister Ma reiterated that WTO members should join hands to address difficulties and rebuild stable and unobstructed channels for food production and supply. Major food exporters should fulfill their international responsibilities to increase supply. Efforts should also be made to improve the overall food security capacity of developing members, boost international cooperation in reducing food loss and waste, and reduce the use of grain to produce energy and other consumption not for the purpose of feeding people. China will, under the guidance of the Belt and Road Initiative and GDI, strengthen policy communication, share its successful experience, and promote practical cooperation in food security with all countries, so as to jointly enhance the capability to deal with food crisis and build an even closer community working toward a shared future for mankind.
