The 2021 SCO Modern Agriculture Development Roundtable was held via video link on Oct. 22, 2021. Vice Minister Ma Youxiang addressed the Roundtable.
The Roundtable was co-hosted by the People’s Government of Shaanxi Province and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Representatives from 16 countries held discussions, focusing on strengthening regional agricultural cooperation for food security.
Vice Minister Ma stated that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the SCO. Over the past two decades, China and relevant countries have stuck together through thick and thin, become closer with each other like family and friends, and enjoyed better development. The grain production of SCO member states has increased more than 40%, and the volume of agro-product trade between China and other SCO member states surged more than eightfold. With concerted efforts in the establishment of SCO Modern Agricultural Exchange Center, the SCO has demonstrated cooperation, solidarity and progress, contributing greatly to global food security.
Vice Minister Ma put forth four-points proposal for boosting regional agricultural cooperation: 1) Improve agricultural cooperation mechanisms, expand opportunities for cooperation, and build a strong cooperation network; 2) Promote cooperation in agricultural S&T, build a strong agricultural professional team, and carry out joint research to seek efficient and suitable solutions; 3) Increase agricultural investment, improve infrastructure, push for the transformation and upgrading of agricultural production, and enhance the capacity to supply agricultural products in the region; and 4) Keep the agricultural supply chain flowing, strengthen cooperation in the industrial chain, safeguard an open, inclusive and fair multilateral trading system, and improve trade liberalization and facilitation in the region.
