The South-South and Triangular Cooperation High-level Round-table Meeting for Sustainable Aquaculture Development, hosted by MARA, was held in Shanghai on September 24. Ministerial representatives of 16 countries, envoys to China and representatives of FAO and IFAD attended the meeting and delivered speeches. Ma Youxiang, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, delivered an opening speech and concluding remarks.

Vice Minister Ma pledged that China would continue to promote global cooperation in aquaculture through South-South and Triangular cooperation, including by promoting ecological farming models, and contributing to capacity building in terms of human resources. China would also support international efforts to strengthen technological innovation in aquaculture through joint research into new technologies and practices, such as genetic breeding, feed nutrition, digital innovation and artificial intelligence. In addition, committed to the transformation of regional and global aquaculture post-COVID-19, China would assist other developing countries with infrastructure development in order to help them recover and build sustainable aquaculture, Ma said.

The meeting was the first high-level event of its kind held in the last two decades, and FAO applauded its successful conclusion. During the meeting, China launched the Initiative on Promoting South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Aquaculture Development, which calls for partnerships, knowledge sharing and technology transfer, building the resilience and potential of aquaculture, and advancing global cooperation to a whole new level. The initiative was positively received among all participants.
