The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) convened the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Solutions Forum on Aug. 30. FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu presided over the forum, and representatives from governments of SIDS and countries in partnership with SIDS, donors, and development agencies participated in this virtual meeting. Ma Youxiang, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, attended the forum via video conference and delivered remarks..
Ma pointed out that China highly values its cooperation with SIDS. In recent years, China has conducted cooperation with SIDS in the following three areas: 1)Refining cooperation mechanisms for strengthened dialogue and exchanges through such events as the China–LAC Agricultural Ministers’ Forum and the China-Pacific Islands Agricultural Cooperation Forum; 2) Helping to increase their capacity for food production by testing and demonstrating agricultural technology, dispatching experts there for technical assistance in rice, vegetable, and Juncao farming through South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund projects; 3) Encouraging Chinese companies to invest in agriculture in SIDS, and inviting them to China to participate in agricultural fairs at no charge.
In the face of global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, Ma suggested that the international community should attach great importance to the use of digital and innovative technologies, support SIDS in agricultural transformation, and focus on green agriculture, so as to further improve local production and life in SIDS.
A biennial institutional platform—"The Small Island Developing States Solutions Platform” was launched—to continue supporting the development of SIDS.
