A symposium on the control of African Swine Fever (ASF) and hog production was held in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province on May 19, 2021. Vice Minister Ma Youxiang addressed the symposium.
The symposium highlighted that hog production nationwide has been recovering at a faster speed since the beginning of 2021, leading to constant increase in pork supply and decline in prices, and easing the supply-demand dynamic for a period to come. However, uncertainties persist in hog production due to higher risk of ASF reoccurrence, rising farming costs and below normal reproductive rate of sows. We cannot relax in measures to boost hog production.
The symposium called for the implementation of the established objectives, measures and standards for the recovery of hog production, and meeting all tasks related with hog production recovery in full. To secure stable and orderly hog production, efforts will be made in the following areas: 1) carrying out the mechanism of provincial party secretaries assuming overall responsibility and city mayors assuming responsibility for the “Vegetable Basket” project; 2) implementation of supportive policies for pig farming; 3) vigilance against ASF resurgence and control measure along the industrial chain; 4) market monitoring and early warning, and counter-cyclical regulation.
The symposium called on large pig farming enterprises to lead the development of pig industry and offer assistance to small and medium-sized pig farming entities by leveraging their advantages, contributing to the high-quality development of the pig industry.
The symposium was joined by the executives from fourteen large-scale pig farming enterprises.
