Forum 2020 on S&T for Agricultural and Rural Development Held in Nanjing

The Forum 2020 on Science and Technology for Agricultural and Rural Development was held in Nanjing on Nov. 20-21, 2020. Vice Minister Zhang Taolin addressed the Forum. 

Vice Minister Zhang emphasized that China should vigorously implement rural revitalization through agricultural technological innovation-driven development. To this end, China shall adhere to the principle of technological self-reliance, modernize supply chains and industrial chains, and employ innovative mechanisms in agricultural S&T.  

 

To strengthen technological innovation in agriculture in the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Vice Minister Zhang put forward the following measures and requirements:  

First, China should strengthen original innovation and research in key and core technologies, enhance fundamental research and its forward-looking vision for agriculture, focus on bottleneck technologies, and strengthen systematic innovation in China’s pursuit of self-reliance in key and core technologies. 

Second, China should strengthen technological prowess with strategic significance, push forward the building of national laboratories and key laboratories, set up innovation platforms for cutting-edge agricultural technologies, and cultivate more world-class talents in agriculture. 

Third, China should accelerate the commercialization and application of research findings, develop a number of institute-enterprise consortia highlighting innovation and serving as pacesetters in application and develop a series of technological innovation centers for modern agriculture. 

Fourth, China should further the reform and opening-up in agricultural S&T, involvement in global innovation drive, and unleash the vitality of innovation in job creation and business startups. 

China released six special research reports at the Forum, including a report on landmark achievements in agricultural S&T during the 13th Five-Year Plan period and a report featuring 10 most significant advances in agricultural S&T in 2020.
