On July 7-9, the Yangtze River Fishing Moratorium Task Force, led by Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Yu Kangzhen, made a field inspection to Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province to implement the circular of the General Office of the State Council on improving the work related to enforing fishing ban in the Yangtze River basin.
The task force visited a number of islands and districts in and around Poyang Lake to check the disposal of decommissioned fishing boats, the livelihoods and re-employment of affected fishermen, and the overall enforcement of the fishing ban. It then had meetings with local officials and fishermen, in order to keep up with the developments and probloems and provide pragmatic guidance.
The task force emphasized the significance and urgency of the fishing ban, calling for prioritizing the enforcement as a political imperative. The task force pointed out that competent authrities should strengthen leadership and coordination at the provincial level, facilitate enforcement at the municipal and county level, and adopt supportive policies and measures as well. In addition, it is also crucial to provide better social security and job opportunities for affected fishermen and further build the capacity of fishery law enforcement.
