Ambassador Guang Defu, Permanent Representative of China to the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture, attended the global event to celebrate World Food Day via video link on Oct. 15, 2021.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was established on Oct. 16, 1945. In 1979, the 20th session of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to designate Oct. 16 as World Food Day. Every year, hundreds of celebrations are held globally to commemorate FAO’s founding on that day in 1945, which is the most important day for the UN food and agricultural system.
At this year’s global celebration, Qu Dongyu, FAO Director-General, Sergio Mattarella, President of Italy, António Guterres, UN Secretary-General, Gilbert F. Houngbo, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, and David M. Beasley, Executive Director of the World Food Programme, delivered remarks. Professor Klaus Schwab, Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, delivered a lecture on “Food Systems Transformation: Levers for Change.” A Dialogue on Tea and Coffee was also held.
Counselor Ni Hongxing, Counselor Tong Yu’e, and Counselor Mei Hongyong of the China Permanent Representation to the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture also participated the celebration event via video link.
