The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to China jointly organized the CAAS-EU Symposium on Innovation in Agricultural Science and Technology on March 30, 2021.

Following the briefing on the International Agricultural Science ProgramHorizon Europe (the EUs program for research and innovation), the two sides held in-depth discussions on future cooperation areas and mechanisms between CAAS and the EU and its member states.

CAAS Vice President Sun Tan stated that the CAAS and the EU and its member states enjoy a long history, sound foundation and broad consensus on goals and visions in cooperation, particularly great potential for cooperation in agricultural technology innovation. In principle, there’s much in common in China’s priorities for international cooperation in agricultural S&T and priorities set forth in Horizon Europe and the European Green Deal.

Vice President Sun Tan proposed that the two sides could step up cooperation on cooperation mechanisms, access to each other’s research resources and platforms for complementarities in research plans, and coordinative utilization of the resources from all parties for greater synergy.

Philippe Vialatte, Minister-Counselor of the Delegation of the EU to China, expressed that the EU and its member states are willing to further cooperation with CAAS and other Chinese research institutes to tackle climate change, poverty and hunger, contributing to the accomplishment of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Representatives from the Department of International Cooperation and the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning of CAAS, and counselors of agriculture and of science and technology from the Delegation of the EU to China and embassies of 11 EU member states attended the symposium.
